Embroidery 102: Reverse Appliqué T-Shirt or Hoodie—11-2-24 (10:00am–2:00pm)
Reverse appliqué is a hand-sewing technique where layers of fabric are stitched together and selectively cut away to reveal patterns and designs. It can be used to add interest to plain fabrics, to creatively mend holes, or to remove/replace unwanted logos/designs.
SKILLS REQUIRED:
No previous experience is required.
SKILLS LEARNED:
Get acquainted with essential tools and materials, including needles, threads, fabric choices, and cutting tools.
Learn how to transfer or print patterns onto fabric and plan your designs for successful reverse appliqué projects.
Explore methods for layering fabrics and securing them in place for precise cutting and stitching.
Use running stitch and/or backstitch to create durable seams.
Safely and accurately cut away fabric layers to reveal your designs.
Finish your appliqué pieces, including trimming and securing edges.
WHAT TO BRING:
Students should bring one t-shirt or top to work on (100% cotton is ideal). A cotton or poly/cotton sweatshirt or hoodie can also be used.
INSTRUCTOR:
This workshop will be led by Michelle Perkins, a Stitch Buffalo staff member and lifelong textile artist. If available, an artist from the Refugee Women’s Workshop will provide classroom support.
