About:
Kids ages 8–14 are invited to explore their creativity at Stitch Buffalo during summer sessions introducing a wide variety of textile arts, materials, and processes. Working in our diverse and inclusive studio over the course of a five-day session, students will learn the fundamentals of sewing, dyeing, weaving, printing, embroidery, and more—plus develop their design and collaborative skills in a relaxed, encouraging environment.
Our class sizes are limited to ensure plenty of individualized attention and support, so students of all skill levels, including absolute beginners, may attend. Students who have previous experience, or who enroll in multiple weeks, will have the opportunity to take on more complex projects in each discipline.
We’ll work both indoors and outdoors as weather permits, so we suggest students wear comfortable, weather-appropriate clothes. It’s best to select something you won’t mind getting dirty. (We do our best to be neat, but some techniques can get messy!)
Instruction:
Lead instructor Dawne Hoeg is the founder and executive director of Stitch Buffalo. She is an experienced instructor who served as the handwork teacher at the Aurora Waldorf School and taught in the Textile and Fiber Arts Design Department at Buffalo State College. She will be assisted by skilled volunteers with strong teaching experience, including artists from the Refugee Women’s Workshop, Stitch Buffalo volunteers, and college interns.
Skills Learned:
• Basic hand and machine sewing
• Weaving
• Fabric design with block printing, sun printing, and resist dyeing
• Macrame bracelets
• Jump rope making
• Hand embroidery and patch making
• Collaboration and teamwork
• Developing and executing designs with color, texture, and pattern
