Garment Sewing: Make Your Own Poncho—10-7-23
Garment Sewing: Make Your Own Poncho—10-7-23
If you’ve taken the “Get the Most From Your Sewing Machine Class” with us or have equivalent basic sewing machine skills, this beginner level class is intended for you. As a great introduction to garment sewing or a refresher, we will be making this easy fit over a half-day session. With only three pattern pieces, this poncho has a neckband that can be narrow or wide and an optional faux leather binding (no mitering, easy easy easy!) at the hem really elevates this piece.
PATTERN AND SIZE INCLUSIVITY:
Small, medium and large size pattern options will be available at class but if you require a different size, the instructor will happily accommodate.
SKILLS YOU WILL LEARN:
• Reading and interpreting garment pattern requirements and instructions
• Fabric properties, laying out and cutting from a pattern
• How to apply faux leather binding (optional)
SUPPLIES:
Please bring your own fabric in the correct yardage for your size. 1-3/8 to 2-1/4 yards of light to medium weight woven or knit fabric are required. We are recommending fleece, wool, or wool blends, novelty wool blends, wool tweed, or boucle for this project. The amount of fabric needed depends on the width of your fabric and the size you are making. See size and fabric guide below for selecting your fabric. There is a limited selection of fabrics available for minimal cost at Stitch Buffalo.
SKILLS REQUIRED:
This is a beginner level garment sewing class. Students should know how to operate a sewing machine and have made at least two other projects (non-garment or garment) on a sewing machine.
INSTRUCTOR:
Michelle Frick has been sewing clothes for herself and others for decades. Her passion is supporting new and experienced sewists in the creation of beautiful, comfortable clothes that fit as great as they look. Over the last two years, Michelle has been working as a garment sewing instructor and has been immersed in research on the latest techniques and methods, including CAD pattern drafting, projector sewing, and sustainable sewing practices both in the home sewing and commercial fashion industries.
SUSTAINABILITY:
Stitch Buffalo is committed to fostering sustainability practices and reducing waste in the textile industry. In this workshop, we will strive to minimize waste and work as much as possible with supplies that have been rescued for reuse.

Stitch Buffalo follows all current local, state, and federal guidelines regarding public health safety.
