Garment Sewing: Minimal Waste Upcycling Class with Rebekah Joy of Flux Bene
This size- and gender-inclusive community class series is centered around updating a second-hand button-down shirt. You will use the Flux Bene Flughafen DIY Guide & Pattern Pieces to upcycle a second-hand button-down shirt into a cropped shirt with large chest pockets and cuffed short sleeves. There are options to add or remove volume from your garment to add visual interest & tailor it to your desired fit. In this class you will learn/ practice:
Considerations for upcycling vs. sewing from scratch
Intermediate alterations
Combining different fabrics together for visual interest
Creating patch pockets
Making straight grain hem tape
Creating double sided cuffs
This class will be conducted across two days: Friday, July 26 (6:00–9:00pm) and Saturday, July 27 (10:0am–4:00pm). You will need to attend both days to complete the project. The enrollment fee includes both days of instruction ($135) and your own copy of the pattern ($15).
SKILLS REQUIRED:
Students should be comfortable using a sewing machine. No garment construction experience is required.
WHAT TO BRING:
One second-hand button-down shirt (woven, not knit). Cotton is easiest to work with. Choose a shirt that fits you well in the shoulders. It can be close-fitting or loose, depending on your preference.
½ yard of contrast or coordinating fabric(s) that you would like to pair with your shirt. (You will need 1 full yard, if adding side panels to your shirt.) If you do not have fabric on-hand to use for this project, we have plenty for you to choose from at Stitch Buffalo.
All other tools and supplies will be provided by Stitch Buffalo. You may bring your own sewing machine or borrow one of ours.
