In this class, we will be learning a beginner-level Coast Salish wool weaving project: a simple, traditional pouch. These pouches are perfect for gift giving! Double sided warping techniques on the cardboard notch loom will be taught, as well as coast Salish twist weaving techniques (also known as “twining”). We will also be learning some of the cultural significance of wool weaving to Indigenous Coast Salish peoples of the northwest coast, as well as the history of this artform. By the end of the class students will have a pouch with two closure options!

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Izzy Fernando is a mixed/Indigenous fiber arts enthusiast, an enrolled member of the Samish nation, and descendant of the Upper Skagit nation. She was taught coast Salish weaving techniques and their cultural significances by her family members and other culture leaders in Coast Salish ancestral lands of Washington state.
