This sequence of four weekly classes is ideal for intermediate sewists who have completed our sequence of beginner sewing classes (or have equivalent experience). If you do not have a machine, you can borrow one of ours, or we can help you find a used machine that suits your needs. $115 class fee covers four weeks of instruction and all supplies.
Classes will be held weekly on Mondays (April 29, May 6, 13, 20) 4:30pm to 6:30pm. Class projects may vary somewhat depending on the instructor and interests of the students.
In “Master Your Machine,” we will focus on practical applications with our sewing machines:
Week 1—Hems
a. Basic folded and topstitched—single and twin needle
b. Invisible/blind hem using your machine’s blind hem stitch
c. Baby/narrow/rolled
i. Hem pre-cut pair of dinner napkins
d. Decorative (knits, dinner napkins, etc)
i. Wing needle
Week 2—Working with Knits
a. Overlock/overcast stitch
b. Jersey stitch, honeycomb stitch
c. Applying elastic
d. Practice with scraps and/ or bring a t-shirt to practice on applying bands, hemming, etc OR construct a 1/3 scale precut tee
e. At Home Project: Full size custom T-shirt or tank
Week 3—Buttonholes
a. Master buttonholes on your machine
b. At Home Project: Button-up pillow cover
Week 4—Finishing Touches
a. Free-motion embroidery for appliqué/patches
b. At Home Project: Embellished wristlet or zippered pouch
INSTRUCTOR:
Michelle Frick has been sewing clothes for herself and others for decades. Her passion is supporting new and experienced sewists in the creation of beautiful, comfortable clothes that fit as great as they look. Over the last two years, Michelle has been working as a garment sewing instructor and has been immersed in research on the latest techniques and methods, including CAD pattern drafting, projector sewing, and sustainable sewing practices both in the home sewing and commercial fashion industries.
