Stitch Buffalo Annual Report: 2024
In 2024, we met dozens of new refugee artisans, including Lailuma and her two daughters, Sahar and Sana (seen here with Stitch Buffalo’s Executive Director, Dawne Hoeg). Lailuma worked as a dentist in Aghanistan, but fled the country with her daughters when Kabul fell to the Taliban. Stitch Buffalo was immediately able to help the women use their existing textile skills to begin earning money as they reestablished their lives in Buffalo.
2024 was another landmark year for Stitch Buffalo—a year of growth, transformation, and deepened community connections. With incredible support from our donors, volunteers, and partners, we expanded opportunities for refugee and immigrant women, strengthened our programs, and reaffirmed our commitment to textile arts as a means of empowerment, sustainability, and cultural preservation.
This year brought significant achievements that strengthened our impact:
Completed renovations and opened new store and studio facility
Served more refugee artisans and community members than ever before
Rescued over 21,000 pounds of textile art supplies for re-use
Hosted vibrant events throughout the community, bringing people together to create and connect.
Completed new strategic and business plans to chart our way forward.
None of this would have been possible without the generous support of our community. This support is more than just financial; it is a shared expression of values and a testament to what we can achieve when we work together. Together, we are bringing people into a collective effort that uplifts lives, fosters creativity, and honors diverse traditions.
Every contribution—whether time, resources, or funding—creates opportunities for refugee women to gain financial independence, express themselves, and preserve their heritage in an equitable, welcoming environment. With the continued dedication of our community to uplifting women, we are committed to expanding opportunities, ensuring sustainability, and keeping Stitch Buffalo a beacon of creativity, resilience, and change.
