Aghabani is a traditional Syrian embroidery method. Cities like Aleppo, Hama, Damascus, and Duma (near Damascus) were famous for this craft. Its famous patterns and styles, like Rash and Wardeh (rose), are often seen on tablecloths, head covers, and clothing, as well as bags, pillow cases and many other items. Grooms traditionally wear wedding suits embroidered with Aghabani, as it said to bring prosperity for the couple’s life.
The threads used in traditional Aghabani embroidery are made of silk. Today, the technique is more often semi-handmade, with a machine helping in the process.
In this workshop, we will use designs from traditional Aghabani textiles created by Syrian artist Nada Odeh. The process will include screen printing the design onto your own textile (such as a pair of jeans, jean jacket, or linen garment) and then hand-embroidering your design using a chain stitch. Samplers will be executed before beginning your own project.
